Bamboo Rafting in Periyar Tiger Reserve
For nature-lovers, here is a chance to have some great times in the lap of Mother Nature. A comforting, yet exciting bamboo rafting through some of the dense forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve! This bamboo rafting is part of the ‘nature walk’ of eco-tourism project by the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
The trip usually commences by 8 in the morning and will conclude by 5 in the evening. A trek through the dense forest will take you to the starting point. A thrilling three hours is guaranteed for those opting bamboo rafting in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. While rafting, keep your eyes and ears open to take in some of the beautiful visuals and captivating sounds. And photographers will get no time to take their fingers from the shutter button.
Butterflies with fascinating wing patterns, flowers with dazzling hues, wild animals like elephants, gaur, sambar… all are here by the banks to welcome you. This is one of the richest and most diverse bio-diversity spots in the Western Ghats. The reflection of the forest-clad hills on the lake is an arresting spectacle.
Each team comprising ten tourists will be accompanied by an armed forest guard and four guides. Most of these guides belong to the tribal communities, who are familiar with every nook and cranny of these dense forests. They are part of the Eco Development Project launched by the government.
The travellers will be provided breakfast comprising bread, jam, and fruits. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will also be served en route. The raft journey finally takes one to the catchment area of the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
Those who want to spend some more time in the jungle can opt for a stay at the Jungle Inn – a one-bedroom accommodation made of bamboo. It resembles the traditional tree-top huts of Kerala called erumadam. A night in candle light that too in the midst of a jungle! Irresistible, isn’t it? Accommodation is also available at Aranya Nivas, a property managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Hotels & Resorts.
